For years Americans have thought of air pollution solely as an outdoor problem. However, a recent study at Yale University has revealed that the air inside of 19 out of 20 homes was considerably more polluted than the outside air. The major cause of indoor air pollution is the dust, dirt, and moisture that accumulate within a home’s air conditioning system and duct work. The moisture and debris commonly found in the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning) systems provides an ideal breeding ground for harmful microbes. Microbial contamination poses a major health risk to people who suffer from allergies, asthma, and other respiratory ailments, as well as those who do not. The American Lung Association and the E.P.A. say that dust particles and other allergens can aggravate allergies and cause breathing problems, lung damage, and pain, especially in the very young and the elderly. Typical symptoms are fatigue, runny nose, nasal congestion, headaches, chills, fever, coughing, and wheezing.
